Banff Mountain Film Festival
November 1-9, 2008

An annual event in its 33rd season, the Banff Mountain Film Festival features great independent film from across North America and around the globe. I’m stoked I stumbled upon this venue and will certainly try to catch a local screening for the 2008 season. In the meantime, check out a few of 2007 winners: 20 Seconds of Joy, a documentary following the adrenaline filled base jumper Karina Hollekim; King Lines, which documents Chris Sharma and his often insane and always exciting life as a professional climber; and Nine Winters Old, probably the most creative and awe inspiring celebration of the winter season. Very cool stuff, make sure to check this out for sure!

From the author of Fight Club, a hilarious flick about a sex addicted man Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell) who feigns choking episodes to gain sympathy and eventual financial support for his ailing mother from the people who save him. Notable scene with Victor and his buddy Denny (Brad William Henke) at a strip club. The conversation between Victor and Cherry Daquari…not her real name… (Gillian Jacobs) will have you rolling. I haven’t seen the entire film, only the trailer, but this is a must see. Hoping the folks over at Fox Searchlight or IFC will comp me a spot at the premier.

By far the most rad surfing documentary that takes you on a ride from Jaws in Maui to Tanker wave surfing in Texas to Cortez Banks….(holy S*&%) and places in between. I’ve been surfing a handful of times years ago and this makes me want to grab the long board and hit the beach. Enough from me, check out the trailer at Fierce.com.
